So, long story short...

While felixchandran was Taking up projects from new clients

felixchandran made the mistake of

Not learning about the person and his/her motives.

My Advice to You is

To learn about your client personally/professionally and make him/her your friend so that your business relationship will grow and nuture as much as your friendship.

Here's the whole story

It happened over the past one month. I got an call from a friend asking me to do a website for his client. The client was a foreigner. I accepted blindly taking for granted that my friend knew his client very well. I met the client and asked him his requirements. He had asked for a website with a gallery to showcase his products. I accepted and asked for an advance to purchase a domain. Everything went smoothly. But the website construction took as I hadn't received the material yet. In the week to follow, the client grew bitter as he was not getting any results from my side. Of course if there were no inputs, how could there be any outputs. He went ahead and purchased a web template online without my consultation and now he is asking me for monetary compensation. The whole deal was a disaster due to the fact that the client was unclear in his inputs and requirements. If he had asked to purchase a template, I would have guided him. But he had called for a designer. I designed websites from scratch. He didn't understand the amount of toil involved. Above all, he didn't respect my profession. I learned a bitter lesson for this episode. Always spend more time with your clients and find out their exact requirements. And further more, find out more about the person and his respect for other individuals.

Man i've gone through this so many times in my life too. The trick is to work with people who value design. I mean really value it and realize its true importance.

There's not much you can do if they don't and situations like you just described are often the results :(.
