So, long story short...

While Clay Galloway was changing my oil

Clay Galloway made the mistake of

draining the transmission fluid instead

My Advice to You is

check the color of the fluid that is draining and check the placement of the bolt you just unscrewed

Here's the whole story

So, when I first got my 4runner I thought that I would save some money by changing the oil myself; wrong. After draining what I thought was my oil, I couldn't get the oil filter off so I decided that I would put the old oil back into the car and have my friend at jiffy lube loosen my filter. When I jump back into my car and tried to back down off the ramps, nothing happened. After freaking out and thinking that I just broke my car, I figured out what happened. Then to make matters worse, when I finally did drain my oil, I had double the amount of liquid that I my oil pan could hold, needless to say, oil went every where.

Invest in a repair manual. If your going to do your own maintenance buy a manual. Sure changing your oil sounds simple and it is if you have knowledge of the procedure and of corse where the engine oil pan is located. But if you lack the knowledge you can get it from a repair manual.

Also, join a group of people who own the same car. You can search for them on Google groups or Yahoo groups. You almost always find someone who lives nearby. Ask them if you can hang around when they work on their car next.
