Unfortunately went through the same thing myself. Although it wouldn't have worked anyways, making that choice wasn't right then and it never will be in the future.

I think it's a difficult decision, but not necessarily the wrong one. I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason... things always work out in the end.

I agree that everything happens for a reason, and sometimes you find yourself in a relationship that on some level you know isn't right. However, if it has to end, and as painful as it will be, it's better to end it on its own merits & reasons, not due to something external like your career. I've made that mistake a couple of times now, and it's just as awful each time. I want never to go through that again!
