So, long story short...

Edgar Vergara made the mistake of

keeping cards from my high school sweetheart

My Advice to You is

leave the past behind and move on

Here's the whole story

I'm one of those people that hoard sentimental things. I'm not sure how typical it is for a guy to keep a bunch of crap in boxes from a significant other, but I did it. I did it all through high school and I kept them into college. One day my girlfriend was cleaning up and found a box full of cards from my high school sweetheart. This naturally sparked a good argument. Every time I tried to defend myself, I pretty much was sticking up for my ex-girlfriend and giving her a reason to somehow still be in my life. You can't really win this argument.

I now look back at this and realize that I was just too immature to let go of the past. As people move into different stages of their life, they need to learn to leave the trivial, such as a high school sweetheart behind.

What do you do with all the holiday cards you get from mom/grandma? I have a hard time justifying keeping those around, but what am I supposed to do with them? Throw them in a shoe box in the closet to look at them 20 years down the road when greeting cards don't exist anymore?

What about keeping hair and making a small animal out of it and storing it a box? Is that weird? If so, please disregard this comment.

Sometimes it's nice to remember. High school memories get fuzzy if there's not something corporeal to remind you. And Dennis, I'm a wee frightened by you now.

It's all about perspective in the situation.

My take on it was: we were dating for a year and she was STILL sending you cards weekly. Plus giving you cookies, shoes, and various gifts. Not to mention how awful she treated me... it was the person and the situation. If you had kept things from sane ex-girlfriends as sentiment, which you do from other exs... I didn't mind.

Oooh, now the rest of the story comes out. But the nice thing is, Lisa, that you won.
