So, long story short...

unless you enjoy frostbite, pay attention
Here's the whole story
I recently injured my knee (torn ACL) and have been icing multiple times a day. I had a follow up doctor's appointment and wanted the swelling to be as little as possible. I put the ice pack directly on my knee, instead of inside the nice protective pouch it came with. When I took the ice pack off 30 minutes later there was a nice white patch of skin on my knee cap that was completely frozen.
After a few minutes the coloration went away, but I have some angry red color now and I know what frostbite feels like!
