So, long story short...

Mary made the mistake of

Getting all noticable dents on my car fixed, at which time, the check engine light immediately came on.

My Advice to You is

Make sure there's nothing mechanically wrong with your car before paying a bunch of money to get it looking good.

Here's the whole story

I'd been wanting to get some body work done on my car (I'm not really great at parking and such - so I've accumulated a few dings and dents) but I waited until I got just ONE more (this one was actually not my fault), and then I knew it was time to take it in. I told my husband that as soon as I got it all pretty looking, something mechanical would go wrong, but he said I was being silly. It's a little older car - a 98, but it has always run like a champ and it's a honda so I plan to keep it a bazillion years. So it comes back from the body place looking like a dream, and I get it all washed and detailed and I'm so happy happy. The check engine light is now on and there is a light tapping noise coming from directly in front of the driver's seat when I accelerate. It hasn't even been a month since the body repairs, and, of course, I'm still paying for them. I can't wait to take it in and find out what mechanical repairs I may need. I hope it needs a whole new engine to go with its body work.

Only when you accelerate? If that's the case at least it could only be a couple of things.

Makes you wonder if the body shop might have actually caused this little issue? I'd bring it to them first and try to put the onus on them :)
