kevinlee’s Story

So, long story short...
kevinlee made the mistake of
losing the keys to the rental truck
My Advice to You is
Put any rental keys on your normal keychin!!! Aside from losing money, it is not as horrible as one would think... Call a locksmith and prepare to pay about 150 dollars.
Here's the whole story
The good news is that I managed to lose the keys after moving all the stuff out of her truck. Also, the truck was conveniently at her apartment, so at least there was not an urgent need to call the locksmith right away.
I didn't know that U-HAUL was going to recommend that I call a locksmith first thing. I was expecting that they had backup keys and that they would charge me for re-keying their vehicle. U-HAUL actually has no keycodes whatsoever.
So if you lose keys, don't even bother mentioning it to the dealer. Often, a fat plastic tag is given with the key so just tell them that you lost it because you put it on your normal keychain. Just call a locksmith (if you can the same day), pay the locksmith and turn in the truck with keys and contract to the local UHAUL during normal working hours so you can obtain a receipt for charges.
In addition to 150 dollars, I was charged an additional 45 dollars for an extra day of rent (lost day because it was too late to call a locksmith).
So if you turn in a truck late, they do not prorate and charge for another complete rental day.
If this should happen to you, and you are as clumsy as I am, expect to fork out 200 bucks. At least the truck wasn't stolen :)

Interesting, I figured U-Haul would've slapped on a ridiculous $500 lost key fee or something. I have yet to hear a positive experience from someone who used U-Haul.
completely unrelated, but does anyone has as much as I do driving big rental trucks?
