So, long story short...

anonymous made the mistake of

thinking that working long and hard and caring deeply about the agency would get me to the next level

My Advice to You is

to control your own brand and your career; don't leave it up to anyone else

Here's the whole story

Focusing on the ad agency I worked for instead of my own career didn't protect me from getting laid off. I never expected to leave because I was happy and because my work ethic was respected and appreciated, so I never touched my portfolio, my resume or my personal brand.

I bounced back with a job quickly because I never stopped networking, but I will never again let my guard down by assuming I'm safe and don't need to build my career outside of my job. In addition to becoming an expert in my craft, I now need to focus on becoming known as an expert in my craft. While I've learned that expertise won't protect my job, I can protect and guide my career when more than a handful of people know about that expertise.

Job security is really an illusion.

Everyone believes they could never be laid off but I've seen some of the most talented people in the world be let go because of money. Money drives a business and hard decisions have to be made sometimes especially in economic down turns like the one we're going through now.
