So, long story short...

spenser giattino made the mistake of

not actully trying to get there

My Advice to You is

stop thinking and start doing

Here's the whole story

I'm always had a problem with school. Im a Sophomore at my local high-school, and I always think about how I want to be a Graphic Designer and what sort of schooling I will need in the process. But while thinking all the time, I never do. I'm failing all my classes and now I have no chance of ever being what I truly want to do with my life. I'm at an end with no way out of it. I don't want some job that I will hate waking up in the moring to go to.

What do I do?

Just realize that not all work for the passion you want to follow in life is going to be easy or come absolutely naturally. You're going to have to do things that seem odd or unrelated but in time you see that they play their role.

For instance, I used to absolutely hate having to learn about history and straight theory of design. I loathed it and I felt it was preventing me from doing real work. But after time, I realized that all those history and theory sessions laid the groundwork to how I design things. They were a necessary evil and I even enjoy it nowadays.

Just remember that stuff will suck sometimes in the beginning, but always keep your goals in mind and stay passionate about what you do.

First off, if you're still in high school, you're definitely too young to be thinking that you are screwed for the rest of your life. Just know that it's the end that matters and that you don't get there without some hard work. You may have not reach your final destination in the shortest time possible, but it's the detours that help you grow as a whole.

I will say this though...getting into Graphic Design so early in high school is really going to help you out in the future. If I could go back and start even earlier, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I just love that high schools are teaching design to kids. Never had that when I was a teen.

Thinking about your goals and your future is always good... but so is having a great education as a foundation. I'm a graphic/web designer as well, and while I was in high school I doodled all the time and took as many art classes as they offered. I used to draw for my friends and even helped a teacher make a scrapbook so I could earn community service hours for a college scholarship.

Use school to your advantage - see what clubs or classes you can sign up for or what projects you can participate in that will allow you to practice your design skills. The key is to work hard, love what you do and everything else will fall into place.

(And Dennis: we DID have a computer design class in high school, btw.)

Start small and start soon. Any doodling or drawing that you do now could be a start of your portfolio.

Some art schools don't care about how much you scored for geography as long as they can see you have talent and your portfolio is good.
