My Advice to You is
Learn Ruby before you learn Rails
Here's the whole story
I bought two books on Rails, read them both and still had no fundamental grasp on what was going on in there. This weekend I bought a book on Ruby and it all makes sense now.
So if you are going to learn the Ruby on Rails framework, learn Ruby first. It will make reading those Rails books a whole hell of a lot less confusing.
