So, long story short...

While noir was in college

noir made the mistake of

studying what I was already good at

My Advice to You is

leave your comfort zone

Here's the whole story

I was always a good writer and an avid reader during my college years. I made the mistake of getting an English degree in college. In retrospect, I should have gotten a Business Degree, a Computer Science degree, or gone to college for Pre-Med. I should have merely minored in English. But no, I had to take the easy route, studying a subject I knew I could ace easily. That was a sad mistake that I will pay for over the course of my life, since now it's too late for me to go back to college and start another career. I haven't even paid off the loans from my first college experience!

This story could easily be one of the most learned from or most related to. I did the EXACT same thing in college with my BFA in Graphic Design.

So what are you working as now? If you loved to write, why would you want to be a programmer or accountant?

I am not currently working, though I've had stints as a Technical Writer, on and off. The problem with Technical Writing is that it isn't really writing, which is a very creative process. If you were designing a home, a writer would be the person who determines the color of the walls, curtains, furniture. A Technical Writer, on the other hand, usually comes into a house that has some design and strips it down to its bare bones to make it saleable (and understandable) to the masses. Having a Business Degree would make me ready for management or opening up my own business; likewise, computer science has always been an interest, along with medicine, but when I was just getting into college, I didn't know I could actually be GOOD at any of those things.
