So, long story short...

While Coby was doing business

Coby made the mistake of

Buying a custom built computer from a friend

My Advice to You is

Buy from a retail store, or build it yourself

Here's the whole story

Years back I decided I needed to upgrade my computer. I had a friend build it instead of going to a retailer. I could have built it myself, but I was busy. And I wanted to patronize his small basement operation (company).

I told him all the custom components I required and he said that he acquired them. Long story short, the building of the computer took waay to long to complete. Longer than what he said. I specifically asked for all black computer parts, DVD burner, mouse, keyboard, floppy drive, case etc. But when the computer finally came back. Everything looked cool accept for the DVD drive - it was white in color. I looked at him and said, "what the hell is this? I gotta multicolored computer?" He says, "Well, they didn't have a black colored DVD drive, so I just put that one in there". What kind of bullshit is that - I thought. All during the design process, he was telling me what was available and what wasn't. He could've at least told me it wasn't available, maybe I could've made some different arrangements.

But, that was forgiven. Next, the computer was super-loud! It was like a refrigerator. I said, "Why is the fan so loud?!" He says, "uh well, that's because XP requires more power and it gets hot and etc etc..." Once again, he could've told me BEFORE the fact. In the end, the computer works fine. All was forgiven. I paid him and I actually typed this message from it. That's the most important part - the computer works great.

But the moral of the story is, build your own computer or go to Micro Center or Best Buy. They have to give you what you request or tell you otherwise. Retail companies have policies in place, support and so on. You can't get that from a friend. A computer is an investment, don't spend $800 bucks for something you're not completely happy with.

My next machine will probably be a Mac. Maybe a Mini Mac and if I'm feeling techy I might just build a PC too. Hope I remember how.

I'm in the process of building a personal computer right now. To me it's just as rewarding as doing all my own work on my car.
