While Brian Balfour was running a startup

Brian Balfour made the mistake of

not realizing the importance of networking

My Advice to You is

talk to as many people as you can, and make sure you stay in touch

Here's the whole story

Business is all about people. If you don't have the right people, you will never succeed.

Make an effort to meet as many people as you can in your industry, and then make the effort to keep in touch with them.

I agree with this totally. What I regret not doing is doing more networking in college. College provides a great atmosphere for networking with clubs, guest speakers, conferences, and even classmates.

Great insight, I've realized this as well. Have you checked out Keith Ferrazzi's book "Never Eat Alone"? It's the best book on networking I've read.
